Application of Serum Separation Gel in the Medical Field
Serum separation gel plays an important role in the medical field, particularly in the collection and processing of blood samples. Premium serum separation gel not only ensures the accuracy and reliability of test results, but improves work efficiency and reduces experimental errors.
Serum separation gel is a reagent with excellent physiological inertness, sealing properties and thixotropy. Its specific density ranges from 1.045 g/cm³ to 1.055 g/cm³, which is between that of serum (1.032 g/cm³) and blood cells (1.090 g/cm³). After blood collection and clotting, the blood sample is centrifuged under certain conditions. The gel structure contains a large number of hydrogen bonds, which form a network structure through association. Under the action of centrifugal force, the network structure is destroyed and the gel becomes a low-viscosity fluid. When the centrifugal force disappears, the network structure is re‑formed and the gel returns to a high‑viscosity fluid. Serum and blood cells are located at the upper and lower parts of the blood collection tube, while the separation gel is positioned between the serum and the clot, forming a complete, dense and inert barrier layer.
Before blood collection, the separation gel is placed at the bottom of the blood collection tube. After blood collection, centrifugation is carried out based on the density gradient principle, so that the separation gel is positioned between serum and blood clot to achieve serum separation.
In clinical laboratory testing, serum separation gel is used for the separation of blood samples in clinical test items such as biochemical indicators, immunological indicators, and nucleic acid detection. Blood samples are usually collected using vacuum blood collection tubes or other non-vacuum collection containers. After blood collection, serum or plasma specimens are separated by centrifugation.
