As a natural glycosaminoglycan extracted and purified from mammalian tissues (such as porcine intestinal mucosa or bovine lung), heparin is one of the indispensable reagents in the fields of life science and medical research. Its core value lies in its strong and predictable anticoagulant activity. With the continuous advancement of medical technology, an increasing variety of testing methods have become available, facilitating the diagnosis and differentiation of diseases. Traditionally, biochemical tests relied on serum separation. Currently, heparin anticoagulant blood collection tubes offer the advantages of faster plasma acquisition and effectively accelerated detection, making them a relatively common method used in clinical biochemical testing.

Heparin is a mucopolysaccharide with a large molecular weight, rich in sulfate groups and multiple negative charges. It exerts excellent anticoagulant effects by inhibiting the activities of thrombin and thromboplastin in plasma, thereby achieving anticoagulation.

 

1. Anticoagulant Principle
1.1 Heparin: Plasma testing using heparin anticoagulant blood collection tubes can hinder massive platelet aggregation in plasma, inhibit the activity of serine proteases in plasma, prevent the action of Plasma Factor X, block the catalysis of thrombin, render most blood factors unable to interact with each other, and maintain the stability of various blood components.

1.2 Calcium-Balanced Heparin: Calcium-balanced lithium heparin contains a certain amount of calcium, which pre-saturates the binding sites of heparin with ions, thereby compensating for the ions bound in the blood. This does not affect the anticoagulant effect of heparin, and also reduces its interference with test results including Ca²⁺, Na⁺, Cl⁻, pH value.Heparin and Calcium-Balanced Heparin 2

During production: Heparin + precisely proportioned Ca²⁺ + Li⁺ → form saturated calcium balanced lithium heparin.

During blood collection: Blood flows into the tube → dried heparin dissolves instantly → pre-saturated heparin no longer chelates Ca²⁺ in the sample → anticoagulates only without sequestering calcium.

 

2. Application
2.1 Sodium Heparin: The use of sodium heparin anticoagulated plasma is a relatively common method in clinical biochemistry testing. Heparin anticoagulated plasma can be obtained more rapidly, and it is mainly used for blood specimen collection and testing in clinical biochemistry, emergency biochemistry, hemorheology, and packed cell volume (PCV) determination. It causes little interference with blood components, does not affect red blood cell volume, and does not induce hemolysis.
2.2 Lithium Heparin: Lithium heparin shares the same anticoagulant mechanism as sodium heparin. It is mainly used for electrolyte analysis, blood gas analysis, and emergency biochemistry testing. Lithium heparin causes less interference with blood cells and ions, making it more suitable for ion concentration detection (such as potassium, sodium, calcium, etc.) and emergency test items.Heparin and Calcium-Balanced Heparin 3
2.3 Calcium-Balanced Lithium Heparin: It is widely used in blood gas analysis, especially in emergency departments and intensive care units where rapid and accurate assessment of patients' blood gas status is required. Due to its low interference with blood gas analysis results, compatibility with electrolyte and calcium ion determination, and excellent stability, it has become the preferred anticoagulant in the field of blood gas analysis.
